First Night in a Ger

We’re pleasantly surprised! Atlas Obscura, via World Expeditions, our tour company, set our expectations rather low for the country ger (AKA ‘yurt’) accommodations. We were not expecting flush toilets or electrical outlets in our our ger, or cell coverage. But, we are happily checking the day’s email and downloading a smattering of news. Our ger is very comfortable, although we had to settle for twin beds. The shared bathrooms a short walk from our ger, are modern, spotless and offer very serviceable showers. I had a very nice shower in the evening.

And the restaurant has a bar!

There’s no rocking motion here, but we sleep deeply. It must be the combination of quiet, darkness and residual fatigue.

On our drive today, about 300 km total, we were taking in sweeping countryside and endless herds of cattle, horses, sheep and goats. It being summer, the herds include newly born members of the herds; adorable foals, cattle, goatlets and sheeplets are everywhere. There are few dogs to be seen, and they seem either wild or working, and all furry-coated. It’s the giant expanse of land and sky that fills our views.
